Medical Industry White Paper: How to create a reliable laser marking on medical stainless steel devices?

31 March 2026

A recent white paper published by ALLTEC Angewandte Laserlicht Technologie GmbH investigates the principles of laser marking on medical stainless steel devices such as surgical tools and medical implants.

Quality control and patient safety methodologies require such medical devices to have unique identifiers for traceability purposes, and laser marking offers a number of advantages over other marking techniques. Issues discussed include choice of laser type, ablative and oxidative marking, corrosion resistance, the effects of passivation on mark visibility and longevity, and marking methods for different types of steel.

The paper finds that optimization of marking parameters is critical for producing high-quality marks which remain visible even after medical cleaning and treatment cycles.
